Where the budget goes in a 1.49 million TRY purchase of 50 laptops: the device is only 68%; warranty, setup and maintenance make up the rest.
When comparing quotes in a bulk computer purchase, most organisations compare only the unit price. Yet a device's three-year total cost of ownership (TCO) is well above its purchase price. The example below shows where the budget goes in an office purchase of 50 laptops.
Example: 50 business laptops, 3 years
For a model with a list price of 22,000 TRY, a 7 percent tiered discount applies at 50 units; the unit price becomes 20,460 TRY.
| Item | Calculation | Amount (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Device cost | 50 × 20,460 TRY | 1,023,000 TRY |
| Extended warranty for year 3 | 50 × 1,490 TRY | 74,500 TRY |
| Bulk setup and imaging | 50 × 350 TRY | 17,500 TRY |
| Bag and mouse | 50 × 450 TRY | 22,500 TRY |
| Corporate maintenance (Standard plan, 36 months) | 9,900 TRY × 36 | 356,400 TRY |
| Total | 1,493,900 TRY |
Total cost per device is 29,878 TRY, and the yearly cost per device is about 9,960 TRY. A striking point: the device cost is only about 68 percent of the total.
Is a cheap device always cheap?
Consider a device with a unit price 15 percent lower but a weak battery and a one-year warranty. By the end of the first year, battery replacement and warranty extension close the gap; and when the working hours a faulty device costs each employee are counted, the total cost comes out higher. If an employee's hourly cost is 450 TRY and the average fault-related loss is 6 hours a year, that is 2,700 TRY per device per year.
Ways to cut cost
- Cross the tiered discount threshold: buying 50 units instead of 48 cuts the unit price from a 5 percent to a 7 percent discount. On a 50-unit purchase the difference is about 20,000 TRY.
- Choose devices by user profile: define three profiles instead of buying everyone a high-end model.
- Take the extended warranty up front: adding it later is possible but usually costs more.
- Tie maintenance to a contract: it gives a predictable monthly cost compared with ad hoc fault fixing.

Questions to ask when comparing quotes
Does the quote state in writing the warranty type (on-site or workshop), DOA exchange time, setup service, stock confirmation and delivery schedule? Do not compare quotes that do not contain the same items directly; first add the missing items to the same table.
